Chakra in Sanskrit means wheel. We learnt about the chakra system from the oldest text, the Vedas in India between 1500BC to 500BC. We have numerous energy centres all over the human body and below and above it. Until my spiritual awakening in April 2018 I thought this was a load of mumbo jumbo. I was raised as a strict Catholic and we were steered clear of anything outside of biblical beliefs. This is part of social conditioning that is clearing to help us ascend to a higher realm of thought and understanding.
So what is the chakra system and why do we need to know about it? All living things have life force or Prana flowing through it. If the energy is free flowing, the being is in balance and in alignment and resonating at a high frequency. Blockages in this powerful healing life force can cause problems in the physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological or mental aspects of the body.
Meditation, visualisations, affirmations, quiet contemplation to listen for divine guidance and inspiration, a healthy diet and lifestyle, purity of mind and body and seeking sacred knowledge are different ways to keep the chakras open, aligned and balanced.
We have 7 main chakras located:
- Crown – at the top of the head
- 3rd Eye – mid forehead above eyebrows
- Throat – mid throat
- Heart – mid thorax at the level of the heart
- Solar Plexus – mid point of upper abdomen
- Sacral – mid point of lower abdomen
- Root – base of spine in tailbone
The chakras relate to different colours as each colour resonates at a different frequency:
Crown – Purple/Violet
3rd Eye – Indigo
Throat – Blue
Heart – Green
Solar Plexus – Yellow
Sacral – Orange
Root – Red
Each chakra affects different organs or regions of the body:
- Crown – pineal, right eye, top of head
- 3rd Eye – lower part of the head, left eye, spine, pituitary gland, nose, ears and central nervous system
- Throat – throat, thyroid gland, lungs, digestive system, top part of the lungs
- Heart – lower part of lungs, heart, thymus gland, liver and circulation system
- Solar Plexus – digestion, stomach, liver, pancreas, gall bladder, emotions
- Sacral – reproductive organs, legs
- Root – bladder, kidneys, spine, adrenal glands
The Crown Chakra
This chakra connects you to Heaven, the Creator or Source, your spirituality. Violet has the shortest wavelength and the highest frequency creating the highest vibration of the visible white light spectrum. Only the highest vibrational beings like Jesus, Mother Mary and Buddha can remain with a balanced Crown Chakra. We are otherwise able to attain it briefly to transcend and gain spiritual enlightenment. In this state there is only Oneness, Cosmic Consciousness, illumination, divinity, divine wisdom, divine magic and the highest level of truth. Deep breathing techniques, visualisations, prayers to the Divine and spiritual Team, affirmations, meditations and doing what inspires you will open the crown chakra.
We experience imbalances when we go through dark knight of the soul to purge, release and push us to seek God. Imbalances can also occur when we feel depressed, isolated, act out of greed and feel stuck. Health issues can arise such as headaches, amnesia and mental health problems. Physically the Crown Chakra relates to the head.
The 3rd Eye
The third eye governs your intuition and inner knowing. It is also linked with the pineal gland, a small endocrine gland which produces melatonin, a serotonin-derived hormone. Melatonin modulates biorhythms, sleep patterns in circadian and seasonal cycles.
Opening the third eye allows insight into reality, Divine wisdom, perception, inspiration, the spiritual world, creativity and intuition. The pineal gland is located in the central part of the brain and is lubricated with cerebral spinal fluid (CSF). It has more blood flow per cubic volume than any organ. The CSF and blood supply make this tiny gland more highly charged with flowing energy than any part of the body. The melatonin is secreted by darkness and inhibited by light. Melatonin governs our moods, sleep patterns and immunity, de-stresses, is anti-ageing and an antioxidant.
The pineal also releases neurochemicals, one of which is Dimenthyltryptamine (DMT). DMT triggers mystical psychedelic experiences. It is also secreted by the pineal during meditation and extreme experiences such as near-death experiences, intense sexual pleasure, heightened stress and life-changing events.
Besides light the pineal is sensitive to vibrations of electromagnetic energy. Rapid beating of the heart from intense feelings of love can create vibrations in the pineal which intensifies its ability to open us up to cosmic consciousness beyond space and time. The pineal picks up on pulses of electromagnetic energy from the North Star for the recipient to receive information from the cosmos. These vibrations cause the Crystal Palace (pineal, pituitary and hypothalmus) to vibrate and in turn the heart activates the rest of the body.
Imbalances create lack of foresight, feeling stuck, fantasising instead of visualising on reality, disconnect with the spiritual world and higher self, confusion and unclear insight. Imbalance in melatonin causes mood swings and depression. It can disrupt sleep patterns.
The throat chakra governs communication and self-expression. It allows us to connect to our spirituality and speak our personal truth and communicate our emotions, beliefs and visions to the world. I believe my throat chakra is in alignment as I have started doing this blog recently and am expressing to the world that which I have been divinely guided.
Blockages can create blockages in the other chakras as it is located at a natural bottleneck for the flow of energy through the chakras. Sore throats, stiffness in the neck and stammering can manifest in imbalances as well as speech problems, poor communication, boasting, being manipulative, lying, speaking excessively, not speaking up and inability to manifest your dreams into reality.
Ways to unblock it are listening to soft music ie. using sound therapy, speaking your truth, singing, being creative, keeping hydrated, visualising the colour blue and wearing blue especially around the throat area, massages, aromatherapy, having a relaxing salt bath to ease the tension in the neck and shoulders, using blue stones and crystals and deep breathing techniques.
The heart chakra connects the upper and lower chakras. It is associated with heart-centred emotions and relationships. Love is the most powerful emotion and can transform one’s psychology and behaviour by the release of the ego to a state of unconditional love and compassion.
We all experience trauma, sadness, hurt, abuse in varying levels at different stages of our lives. We do not live in a perfect peaceful world filled with happiness and equality. There is lack, deprivation, abuse in all forms, trauma and prejudice in all that is different. These are periods of testing and stretching so we can reflect on areas of our lives that need changing, emotions that needs transmuting and the catalyst to force us to better ourselves. The answer to keeping the heart chakra open is to love unconditionally, forgive the person even if you can’t forgive the action and do what makes you happy.
Knowing what pain and suffering feels like can help us to undertake altruistic acts. The trauma emotions transmute to compassion for others. It has an amazing ripple effect seen countless times, seen as when Bob Geldof raised funds and awareness for the plight of poverty-stricken Africa. When I think of some of the greatest acts of forgiveness I think of Nelson Mandela who chose peace and unity. That single act of forgiveness united a country so divided and became a catalyst for change globally.
Ways to open or keep open the heart chakra include meditation, spending time in nature, undertaking acts to benefit mankind done with an open heart, being kind to yourself and practicing self-love, being compassionate and empathetic and expressing love to those closest to you. Green is the colour of the heart chakra so visualising green helps. Be grateful for all the positives in life. Appreciate the beauty in the nature and the world around us. Express creativity through art and music. Keep a journal for self-expression. Yoga and breathing techniques can unblock the chakra.
Blockages can manifest as respiratory, circulatory and heart problems. Emotionally it can cause a person to be jealous, reclusive, codependent and needy, closed off emotionally, distrust and holding grudges.
Solar Plexus Chakra
The Solar Plexus chakra is located between the Solar Plexus and navel.
It governs your will power, ego, self esteem, self-disciple and is the core of who you are as a person.
Karma and past life experiences can bring out negative emotions such as shame, self-loathing, doubting yourself, being conflicted, being fearful and lacking in confidence.
To overcome these emotions to clear your chakra, you can forgive yourself for past mistakes and learn the lessons that karma is teaching you. This way you will be less judgemental and critical and learn to move on. Spend time in the sun to feel its warmth and vitality. Visualise a yellow orb over the solar plexus, breathe in slowly and image it expanding and exhale to visualise yellow energy flowing from the orb into every cell of your body. Look in the mirror every morning and recite affirmations of self-love, for example:
‘I am loved, I am loving, I am loveable’
This chakra is located in the lower abdomen. It is affects your sexual emotions. Blockages can be created by sexual abuse and trauma, emotional abuse, neglect, alcohol and drug abuse families, parental lack of mirroring and overly-restrictive situations such as religious or societal constraints.
This can leave a person feeling unloved and isolated, frigid, have sexual problems, oversexualisations and lack of passion and excitement. Physical symptoms can be menstrual problems, unintended weight loss, ulcers, allergies, diabetes, depression, Borderline Personality Disorder and repressed emotions.
To combat sexual problems, seek loving, fulfilling and emotionally- balanced relationships. Staying in abusive, volatile and emotionally- unfulfilling relationships will leave the sacral chakra blocked. The appropriate type of therapy can help release unhealthy emotions from past traumas. Visualise orange when doing sacral chakra meditations. As well as dealing with the emotional self, practice self-love by respecting yourself and taking care of the physical self too by eating healthy foods and exercising to maintain a healthy lifestyle and outlook.
Located at the base of the spine, the root chakra is about what makes you feel safe, secure, gives you stability and grounds you. The root chakra is considered to be the first chakra.
Feelings of lack, fears, insecurities can give the illusion of a situation that is worse than it is. Fears can also lead to greed, hoarding and selfish acts. Negative thoughts can lead to anxieties, lack of restful sleep, paranoia and cynicism. Healthy eating and sharing of food can avoid excessive eating. Donating clothes, furniture, food, money and time to charity and those less fortunate will change societal ideals from self-centred to benevolent, compassionate, generous and community-based. To feel more grounded, spend time in nature. Engage in environmentally-friendly and sustainable projects, such as tree-planting and recycling.
